Integrating Ethics into the Management of Water Ecosystems

Ethical assumptions about how water and water ecosystems (e.g., rivers, lakes, wetlands) should be used constitute powerful drivers of water management and investment strategies. Through a process of "unwrapping" and analyzing the underlying values held by diverse stakeholders, debate can focus on the values directly. But then what? How can we engage with various categories of stakeholders to facilitate a "revaluation" process?

Hawaii´s State Museum of Cultural and Natural History: Origins and Recent Growth Patterns

In 1988, the State of Hawaii Legislature passed a bill inspired by the Smithsonian Institution model, and established that "The official designation of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum shall be the State of Hawaii Museum of Natural and Cultural History." Its approval by Governor John Waihee increased the frequency and amount of financial appropriations in the biennial budget and facilitated other contributions. In 1992, the Legislature designated Bishop Museum as the Hawaii Biological Survey of the Hawaiian archipelago.

Responsibility for stewardship and resilience in climate futures.

This workshop will investigate responsibility as a means of environmental governance and as an approach to resolve conflict over access to resources.

A Proposal for Management for Secondary Environmental Damages by Natural Disasters

On March 11, 2011, the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan. It was the most powerful earthquake to ever impact Japan and one of the five most powerful earthquakes recorded since records began in 1900.

In addition to loss of life and destruction of infrastructure, the earthquake and subsequent tsunami also caused significant damage at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant (Fukushima).

Recruiting policy champions for nature conservation

Experience has shown a gulf between what conservationists and national policy-makers see as important. On one side are global perspectives and concerns over biodiversity and climate change, and on the other are short-term priorities to deliver economic rewards to key constituents, whereas in one form or another the assertion of national sovereignty prevailed. Bridging this cognitive gap requires more than excellent communication tools, and demands investment in building among policy-makers awareness, interest, a desire for change and commitment to the actions that lead to change.

Monetary Justice and Sustainability

The starting point of our Knowledge Cafe is the fact that monetary phenomena have significant impacts on the real economy. There is no such thing as "neutrality of money" (i.e., the notion that given the technology and preferences of agents, monetary phenomena do not affect the outcome of market processes). On the contrary, money matters in fundamental ways for modern capitalist economies, whether we look at them from the aggregate perspective (macroeconomics) or at a micro level.
