Employment of objective methods of landscape valuation in environments altered by the man

Key Issues in International Water Law - Identifying Progressive Solutions from Best Practice

The principles and procedures which comprise International Water Law have developed rapidly in recent years but many uncertainties remain, due in large part to the emergence of a number of novel challenges in international water resources management. The CEL Specialist Group on Water and Wetlands (SGWW) is engaged in a comprehensive and in-depth examination of international best practice in respect of three key issues currently arising in the practice of International Water Law:
1. The Role of International Water Law in Climate Change Adaptation;

A "mini" Forests Dialogue: Multi-stakeholder reflections on challenges and opportunities of the REDD+ Readiness phase

A "mini dialogue" is proposed in collaboration with The Forests Dialogue (TFD). Over the past years, TFD and IUCN have jointly organised many multi-stakeholder dialogues on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and other crucial forest issues. TFD dialogues bring together forest leaders representing main stakeholder groups in the forest sector, to build relationships based on trust, commitment and understanding.

Financing Protected Areas: Addressing the costs of prevention

Financing of Protected Areas usually depends on public funding, even thow there are several and growing risks generated by private activities. From tourism and agriculture through extractive industries and dams, either on central or peripheral areas, a wide spectrum of risks determine increasing activities and costs emerging from prevention tasks. Public private partnerships shall address such issues building on a new generation of green funds to avoiddamages of missprevention.

Demand reduction messaging for consumption of tigers and other endangered wildlife species

The world will see iconic wildlife species go extinct in the near future if the unbridled demand for parts and products of these and other endangered species is not significantly reduced. This has already happened for sub-species of tiger and rhino in Asia. There is little doubt that in the short term, direct action to identify and apprehend poachers and illegal traders is of the utmost importance, but without a complementary effort to impact the persistent market demand that drives this trade, emergency enforcement action alone will be in vain.

ENGAGING PARTNERS AND DONORS FOR ENHANCED IPs LAND / NATURAL RESOURCES RIGHTS IN CENTRAL AFRICA

Countries of Central African region host some of the most important forest dwelling Indigenous People (IPs) and nature dependent communities whose livelihood and cultures depend on some of the most biologically rich landscapes of the world. These IP communities are traditionally nomadic or semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers, or transhumant cattle pastoralists such. IPs face the urgency of adaptation.

Parks and landscapes. Policies, planning and management

The main poster’s topic is the relationship between nature conservation policies and landscape policies, taking into account the strategic relevance of this theme in the IUCN´s debate, in the UNESCO policy, in the European Landscape Convention (Council of Europe, 2000) and its possible development at the world level: the focal question is to verify whether, and at which conditions, landscape policies may strengthen the role and effectiveness of Protected Areas and, inversely, whether Protected Areas can be a privileged field for the application of landscape policies.
