Mobilizing knowledge for enhanced governance of trade in wildlife between Africa and China

The value of Africa-China trade has grown almost ten-fold from USD10 billion in 2000 to over USD91 billion in 2009, making China Africa´s largest trading partner. From 2001-2009, Africa exported over 4.7 billion USD worth of timber products to China, fisheries products worth 16 million USD and nearly 23 million USD worth wild medicinal plants. Sustaining the use of Africa´s wild plants and animals at this scale will be a considerable challenge.

Establishing a regional organization for managing the aquatic ecosystems of East Asia

East Asia is a very densely populated area where one third of the world’s population resides; most of them reside in river basins and coastal areas where population and economic growth have been fastest, threatening food security and the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems, especially in coastal and estuarine areas where freshwater and marine ecosystems actively interact. The rivers and adjacent seas of East Asia are productive enough to support ca. 40% of the global fisheries yield and to account for ca.

Showcasing REDD+ pro-poor strategies in Uganda, Indonesia, Guatemala, Cameroon and Ghana

IUCN is developing Pro-Poor options for REDD+. IUCN’s Pro-Poor REDD+ approach is being shaped and developed in Guatemala, Cameroon, Ghana, Uganda and Indonesia. The proposed poster will inform visitors to the 2012 WCC and showcase successful experiences with the shaping of the Pro-Poor REDD+ Approach in these countries. The objective of the approach is for REDD+ not to create additional burdens for the rural poor, and to influence national REDD+ frameworks to take the interests of forest-reliant communities, Indigenous Peoples, women and other vulnerable groups into account.

Understanding the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing

Access and benefit sharing (ABS) refers to the process by which genetic resources are accessed and the benefits that result from their use are shared between those who provide the resources (providers, i.e. States, communities within those States) and those who use them (users, i.e. researchers, industries). It also relates to the traditional knowledge of indigenous and local communities (ILCs) associated with those genetic resources. ABS has the potential to enable States and their ILCs to conserve and sustainably use their biological diversity and to be rewarded for such efforts.

Decision theory based conservation management

Using the example of surface water management we will show how decision theory concepts can be applied to conservation projects. The standardized procedure we propose will make the decision process of any such project very transparent and focused.

The Environment and Natural Resources During and After Armed Conflict: Lessons and Way Forward (CEL official session)

Natural resources play an integral role in many armed conflicts and in the subsequent peacebuilding processes. Disputes over natural resources can provide the spark for conflict; natural resources can contribute to financing conflicts; and they are important to livelihoods of local people, making their effective management vital.

Training on the implementation of rights-based approaches to conservation

Various groups and organizations, from the local to the global spheres, have attempted to shift legal frameworks, policies and practices towards conservation objectives factoring (human) rights considerations in their decision-making processes in order to promote biodiversity conservation and at the same time secure the rights of people. This has been referred to as rights-based approaches to conservation (RBAs).

Implementation of the Action Plan for the Conservation of West African Manatees in Guinea-Bissau

The poster will show first project results concerning the actions of CBD-Habitat supported by OceanCare to improve the implementation of the Action Plan for the Western African Manatee on the field in Guinea-Bissau. The support of the Manatee action plan was developed mainly by performing a valorisation of its status in Orango National Park (Guinea-Bissau) as well as by the identification of the impact that fisheries causes to the population, and the identification of critical habitats of the species in order that their protection can be improved by national authorities.
