Future pressures and opportunities for conservation introductions: what might be moved and where, responsibly?

IUCN´s 1998 Guidelines for Reintroduction are a globally applied set of principles available in 7 languages, forming the basis of many taxon-specific versions. Despite use and application worldwide, the Guidelines required updating in light of acute, new pressures facing species, and to better guide the deliberate translocations of plants and animals proposed ostensibly for conservation purposes.

Conservation of the Okinawa Dugong: After Two IUCN Recommendations and One IUCN Resolution

In the last 12 years, the IUCN has passed two recommendations (2.72 and 3.114) and one resolution (4.022) to promote the conservation of the Okinawa dugong in light of the US and Japanese governments´ plan to construct a US military base in Henoko/Oura Bay, Okinawa, a critical habitat for the Okinawa dugong. While the construction plan still remains in effect, the recommendations/resolution have proved to be important tools in the sustained conservation efforts for the Okinawa dugong and their habitats.

Limiting biodiversity impacts from biofuels through land use mapping and certification schemes

Biofuel production is a major and increasing threat to many ecosystems of high conservation importance. To reduce such impacts sustainability accreditation schemes have been developed, which can be used to show compliance with mandatory sustainability criteria, such as those included in the EU´s Renewable Energy Directive.

A Union Working Together to Engage Society for a Sustainable Future

As the Union will launch its new IUCN Programme 2013-2016 in a rapidly changing world, Council intends to engage with the Members and Commissions of IUCN in a discussion about how to ensure an effective constituent structure and influential engagement of key actors in society to deliver on IUCN´s vision and mission. This discussion will focus on the nature of IUCN´s constituent parts and the qualities we need in the future in our membership and membership structures, in the Commissions, in the Secretariat and in Council.

The VITEK Indicator: A New Method for Measuring the Retention or Change of Traditional Knowledge

Target 18 of the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 requires that, by 2020, "the traditional knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities [...] are respected, subject to national legislation and relevant international obligations, and fully integrated and reflected in the implementation of the Convention". To achieve this goal, it is crucial to have reliable means to gauge what is happening with traditional environmental knowledge (TEK) around the world.

Integrating Ethics into the Management of Water Ecosystems

Ethical assumptions about how water and water ecosystems (e.g., rivers, lakes, wetlands) should be used constitute powerful drivers of water management and investment strategies. Through a process of "unwrapping" and analyzing the underlying values held by diverse stakeholders, debate can focus on the values directly. But then what? How can we engage with various categories of stakeholders to facilitate a "revaluation" process?

Addressing the Biodiversity Crisis: Lessons from Climate Change

Biodiversity loss is a problem of global significance with serious implications for human wellbeing, compromising our ability to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Despite this, and despite the wealth of scientific evidence on the scale of the problem, biodiversity loss does not receive a commensurate level of attention at national and international levels.

A Proposal for Management for Secondary Environmental Damages by Natural Disasters

On March 11, 2011, the magnitude 9.0 Tohoku earthquake occurred off the coast of Japan. It was the most powerful earthquake to ever impact Japan and one of the five most powerful earthquakes recorded since records began in 1900.

In addition to loss of life and destruction of infrastructure, the earthquake and subsequent tsunami also caused significant damage at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant (Fukushima).
