Recruiting policy champions for nature conservation

Experience has shown a gulf between what conservationists and national policy-makers see as important. On one side are global perspectives and concerns over biodiversity and climate change, and on the other are short-term priorities to deliver economic rewards to key constituents, whereas in one form or another the assertion of national sovereignty prevailed. Bridging this cognitive gap requires more than excellent communication tools, and demands investment in building among policy-makers awareness, interest, a desire for change and commitment to the actions that lead to change.

Wiser discussion about ethical and responsible engagement with the private sector to promote change (CEESP official session)

This workshop will focus on the implementation of IUCN's Business Engagement Strategy in the context of IUCN's One Programme Charter and the Commission on the Environmental, Economic, and Social Policy's (CEESP) Mandate priority "Enhanced capacity of civil society, governments and the private sector to ensure corporate social and environmental accountability and reduce the negative impact of industries on climate, bio-cultural diversity and food security."

Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO): One Asia for Green Asia

We would like to organize a Workshop on establishing AFoCO (Asian Forest Cooperation Organization), a regional organization, according to the "Agreement" to be adopted and ratified by the ASEAN Member States and Republic of Korea (ROK) this year. Included in our knowledge products are the accomplishments of what we have done through cooperation between ASEAN and ROK and the progress in the establishment of AFoCO. AFoCO´s vision, objective and legal status, structure and organizational chart, and areas of cooperation will be also highlighted.

IMPERATIVE TO ACT - Greening Higher Education for Next Generation of Sustainability Leadership

Primarily, the knowledge café is aimed at; sharing know how on aspects of curriculum orientations, teaching & learning approaches, transformative research (action & applied research), community engagement, students participation and networking for a green economy and sustainable management and use of ecosystem services within the broader context of education for sustainable development in higher education and the concept of ´greening higher education´.

Promoting a New Conservation Ethic Based on Respect for Indigenous Peoples (CEESP official event)

A priority identified at an IUCN Canadian Forum was "recognizing the inherent responsibilities and guardianship Aboriginal people have with respect to the earth, there is a need to recognize their ways of knowing and their treaty rights, and to engage in cross-cultural relationships in support of joint priorities." Four Indigenous representatives from North America, South America, Africa and Asia will discuss their connections to land and how those connections are being challenged by conservation initiatives that are foreign to their world view.

Integrating ecosystem service value assessment into environmental assessment

Human well-being is entirely dependent on ecosystem and biodiversity, yet these resources and their own values are being degraded dramatically as the human society is developed. Ecosystem service could be a criterion for valuing natural resources, regarding the preservation of natural resources and their uses. Nevertheless, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment identified the systematic under-valuation on ecosystem service and the failure to capture its value.

Providing incentives to enhance ecosystem services from biodiversity and promote conservation in the agricultural matrix.

Biodiversity provides key ecosystem services for farmers around the world, including pest control, pollination, and soil improvement. This biodiversity can reach surprisingly high levels, particularly in traditional farming systems. Agroecology is unraveling the ecological processes at work, but significant portions of the biodiversity involved remain undescribed.

Employment of objective methods of landscape valuation in environments altered by the man

A "mini" Forests Dialogue: Multi-stakeholder reflections on challenges and opportunities of the REDD+ Readiness phase

A "mini dialogue" is proposed in collaboration with The Forests Dialogue (TFD). Over the past years, TFD and IUCN have jointly organised many multi-stakeholder dialogues on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and other crucial forest issues. TFD dialogues bring together forest leaders representing main stakeholder groups in the forest sector, to build relationships based on trust, commitment and understanding.
