Re-introduction of the Asian black bear: Working towards the recovery of a healthy ecosystem

Asiatic black bears (Ursusthibetanus)are distributed wildly in Asia, from Japan in the east to Iran in the west. They are Vulnerable (IUCN category), AppendixⅠ (CITES listing) and endangered species categoryⅠ in South Korea.
So to augment this population, a reintroduction project was initiated, with the aim of establishing a self-sustaining population in Jirisan National Park.

World Heritage 40th birthday celebration

Join us at the Protected Planet Pavilion to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention. This closing event of the Pavilion will speak to the achievements and future for World Heritage, present images and films from these iconic conservation sites, and be a chance to reflect on the many Congress events that will have focused on World Heritage. Regional platforms for enhanced conservation – experiences from South-Eastern Europe and the South Caucasus

Convening stakeholders and building partnerships for action lies at the core of IUCN’s mission and is the principle applied across our work on protected areas in Europe. Centered on transboundary conservation and diversified governance approaches, regional conservation platforms in South-Eastern Europe and the Caucasus region help define common objectives, convene different actors, and promote joint actions and solutions.

The World Heritage Compact and filling the gaps on the World Heritage List

This opening session of the final day of the Protected Planet Pavilion will feature two flagship initiatives for the future of the World Heritage Convention – the World Heritage COMPACT initiative and the new global World Heritage biodiversity gaps analysis. You will hear about these two major initiatives, and meet the people behind them. In addition this session will be a general surgery on all matters World Heritage, with staff from the IUCN World Heritage Programme, and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre on hand to answer your questions.

Sustaining livelihoods: the children and nature connection and launch of a report on wild flora for rural livelihoods

BGCI Report Launch: Wild flora for rural livelihoods. The report highlights the huge importance of wild plants for livelihoods in Brazil, China, Mexico and India and the opportunities for inclusion of resource species in ecological restoration and maintaining connectivity between protected areas.
