Promoting a New Conservation Ethic Based on Respect for Indigenous Peoples (CEESP official event)

A priority identified at an IUCN Canadian Forum was "recognizing the inherent responsibilities and guardianship Aboriginal people have with respect to the earth, there is a need to recognize their ways of knowing and their treaty rights, and to engage in cross-cultural relationships in support of joint priorities." Four Indigenous representatives from North America, South America, Africa and Asia will discuss their connections to land and how those connections are being challenged by conservation initiatives that are foreign to their world view.

Experience of the local ECONET implementation: harmonization between nature conservation and local livelihoods needs and future prospects

Development of Econet began much later in the newly independent states (Russian Federation, Kazakhstan and Central Asia, East European countries etc.). The most important progress has been achieved in Ukraine and Kazakhstan, where environmental legislation now includes the concept of Econet. With the support of international conservation organizations Econet schemes were designed, and practical implementation started through some pilot projects (WWF Netherlands, MFA/WWF Norway) , e.g.

From Forest Eco-corridor of Korean Peninsula to Northeast Asia Eco-corridor

Baekdudaegan that is North-east Asia eco-corridor was attacked and lost the networking function of ecosystems by people´s excessive activity such as making the border line, armed conflict and indiscreeting land use. Therefore, after recognizing the changes in animals and plants by ecological severance,
we would like to share the plans, opinions and ideas for the restoration of Northeast Asia´s
ecological networks function and how to build its cooperative restoration system.

Urbanization on biodiversity

The effect of urbanization on plant diversity has been an important subject in urban ecology .It is predicted that in the next 15 years, the number of million-population cities will increase by 40%, and mainly arise occur in developing countries.Ecological effects brought by urbanization has been highlighted in recent years, especially researches on effects of urbanization on biodiversity being becoming a hot topic in Europe, North America, and Australia, - however, there is seldom studiesy on this topic in the developing countries are rare.

Development and promotion of local community through conservation of evergreen broad-leaved forest in east Asia.

Evergreen broad-leaved forests are found continuously from tropical to warm-temperate region in east Asia, especially lucidophylolus forests in east Asia have several specific traits to adopt northern limit of the forests. However, primeval lucidophyllous forests have endangered due to development and overuse of human activities in whole east Asian countries. We have started a model project to restore natural forest from commercial forest with multi-stakeholders, and to develop and promotion of local community in harmony with nature in Aya town, Miyazaki prefecture, southern Japan.

Management effectiveness and connectivity to promote resilience of protected areas and biodiversity conservation in the climate change context.

Mexico´s National Commission for Protected Areas (CONANP in Spanish) is a federal institution in charge of the management and protection of the country´s protected areas. In addition to working towards long-term conservation of nature and its associated ecosystem services and cultural values, protected areas present the unique opportunity to support national climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Employment of objective methods of landscape valuation in environments altered by the man

The SMART, Results-based Approach to Saving Tigers, Elephants, Great Apes and Other Threatened Species

In many protected areas and community lands environmental managers are, unfortunately, poorly equipped to regulate and direct their limited resources, resulting in inefficient and ineffective interventions and ultimately the loss of biodiversity and valued ecosystem services.
