Operationalizing the Ecosystem Approach in conservation and development cooperation projects

There is an internationally generalised concurrence on the merits of planning and managing environmental conservation and development in an “Integrated”, “Holistic”, “Comprehensive” way. In this regard, the IUCN Ecosystem Approach (EA), with its five steps to implementation, emerged as one the most significant reference framework for a number of conservation and development cooperation projects.

It is Korea’s national heritage that is very important historically, culturally and industrially. Furthermore, Korean ginseng is Korea’s representative agricultural crop for special use whose excellent quality is recognized world wide and has been used as an important medicinal means among especially oriental countries for a long time. The history of Korean ginseng can be traced back more than 2,000 years.

Reaching and surpassing Aichi Target 11 through the appropriate recognition of ICCAs

This workshop to be held at the Community Ma–eul in the morning session of the 8th of September will offer a wide view of the potential and roles of indigenous peoples and local communities in conservation-- an important component of management effectiveness, good governance and sustainability/ resilience. Participants will be accompanied to:

(i) explore examples and defining characteristics of Indigenous Peoples’ and Community Conserved Territories and Areas (ICCAs for short);

New Models for Engaging Local Communities in Stewardship of Protected Areas: Lessons from World Heritage

High profile protected areas, World Heritage sites and Biosphere Reserves serve as “learning laboratories for sustainable development” and demonstration sites for new ways to sustain ecosystems, species and genetic diversity. This workshop will feature models that make a practical local-to-global connection, building networks among successful projects and linking to financing options.

Launch of the 10 Year strategy to protect the crown jewels of the ocean

The objective of the event is to launch the new strategy for UNESCO's World Heritage Marine Programme. It will set out the goal of what the programme aims to achieve by 2022 and the actions and activities it plans to set up to get there.

Our Protected Planet: Enhancing worldwide knowledge on protected areas in the Republic of Korea, China and Japan

National parks and other protected areas are the cornerstones in most biodiversity conservation efforts. Accurate information on protected areas is required for decision making and to report progress on national and international protected area targets such as the CBD’s Aichi Biodiversity Target 11. This session will demonstrate the value of such information for three biodiversity-rich countries in Asia.
