Implementation of the UN Decade on Biodiversity with a focus on South East Asian countries

The Decade on Biodiversity is the global strategic framework for biodiversity conservation since COP10 of CBD, Nagoya in 2010. Especially the targets on awareness raising, involving citizens in actions, conserving wild places and species together with related policy work are fields of activity where zoos and aquariums can contribute and make a difference. Globally, zoos and aquariums receive more than 700 Mio visitors each year - a huge potential for involvement and conveying the conservation messages.

Enhancing the North-East Asian Ecological Network for Conservation of Endangered Birds and their Habitat

The nature and culture in North-East Asia is supported by one ecosystem. During last several decades, on the one hand, each country in this region has been accomplished rapid economic development, but on the other, it has the depletion of the natural resources and extinction of the species. Under this circumstance we need an integrated management system and network for conservation and restoration of endangered birds and their habitats in the region.

Building capacity for conservation of wild felids and their supporting ecosystems in China

We are working to strengthened national and local capacity applied to the monitoring and conservation of wild felid species throughout China. China remains one of the world’s most bio-diverse nations, with a vast array of ecosystems and species, including 13 of the world’s 36 wild felid species. This work is addressing China’s lack of capacity and expertise to monitor and manage felid biodiversity within their expanding number of PAs. Wild felids are both particularly threatened and particularly good umbrella species, providing a charismatic model for conservation.

Getting to action: secrets to influencing climate resilient decision –making

Successfully addressing the global climate change challenge is a key concern to the IUCN community. How to best pass on the important messages, knowledge and information to technocrats? How to get a decision-maker to take climate sensible policy action?

Beyond Jargon II The Next Generation of Communication Strategies for a Sustainable World

In the face of 21st century information overload and opportunity, how can we use high-impact communication strategies to reach key audiences and drive conservation action? And how can IUCN contribute by supporting communications partnerships that move beyond the normal conservation jargon?

Choosing your conservation flagship: an evidence-based approach

Flagship species are instrumental in raising awareness and changing behaviour for biodiversity conservation. However, most flagships are selected without engaging the stakeholders they attempt to influence, which can acutely hamper their effectiveness. To tackle this issue, we developed a framework based on social marketing and environmental economics which aims at understanding the values key stakeholders hold for different species.

Understanding and Implementing the IUCN Protected Area Management Categories

Most national and regional protected area strategies include a protected area network as a fundamental component. IUCN WCPA´s definition and categorisation of protected area types allows policy makers and international organisations to quantify and understand this global network of protected areas; and the CBD´s Programme of Work on Protected Areas encourages the use of IUCN´s harmonised system for reporting protected areas.

How zoos, aquaria, museums can (be used) contribute better developing the biodiversity-consciousness

We all live in a changing world were we need to join forces in order to stop the decline of biodiversity - which the humas population as well as animals and nature rely upon. Zoos, aquariums and museums attract many visitors every year (in Europe about 125 million visitors every year!) and they are a very good place to reach out with information and education.
