Large Carnivores Initiative in West and Central Africa

There is a large mammal crisis in West and Central Africa, which has largely gone unnoticed to the international conservation community (Craigie et al, 2010). Large carnivores are keystone species. This workshop intends to share knowledge and mobilise IUCN members to take action for ecosystem restoration, with a focus on the dry savannah zone, using carnivores as ecosystem embassadors. Special focus will be on stakeholder involvement including policy makers, local governments, private sector, women and indigenous communities.

Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Mining in South Africa

The potential of mining to impact biodiversity is well known, but little has been done in South Africa, one of the world´s major mining countries, to assist mining companies to reduce their impacts on biodiversity and contribute positively to biodiversity conservation. Instead they have been expected to show initiative or follow international examples of good practice, such as the International Council on Mining and Metal´s (ICMM) Good Practice Guidance (GPG) for Mining and Biodiversity, which was developed through ICMM´s dialogue with IUCN.

Optimising CREMAs for Livelihood and Biodiversity Sustainability

Ghana adopted the establishment and development of Community Resource Management Areas (CREMAs) as an integrated land use management approach to securing biodiversity and livelihoods in protected and off-reserve areas in 2000. Since then, government and civil society in the forestry sector have made conscious efforts to optimize the functions and structures of CREMAs to meet the policy aims of the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission Ghana.

The Diamond Route-natural resource management, environmental awareness and social development

Launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, the Diamond Route is a biodiversity conservation, education and outreach initiative from De Beers and its South African Shareholders (the Oppenheimer family and Ponahalo Investments- De Beers’ Black Economic Empowerment partner).

Enhancing the resilience of antelopes to human threats: from plan to action

The Antelope Specialist Group (ASG) of the SSC/IUCN is very much concerned with the pressing need for action in preserving antelopes in general. Antelopes are subject to a number of surveys for assessing their conservation status. However, "counting antelopes does not save them". The ASG would like to take advantage of this knowledge cafe for addressing the specific issue of how to transform recommendations into action.

Uniting for action in the Western Indian Ocean: climate resilience, food security and biodiversity conservation

The Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region has a rich diversity of marine and coastal ecosystems, from a distinct evolutionary history over 100 million years old. The region has a geographic and marine identity encircled by the east coast of Africa and the mid-ocean banks ringing the southwest Indian Ocean islands and by marine currents south of the equator. The coastal and marine ecosystems of the WIO provide food and income for over 60 million people as well as other goods and services of strategic importance to national economies.
