Los pueblos indígenas están íntimamente relacionados a la biodiversidad y gracias a ella, viven y se ha establecido esta relación.

Yasuní-ITT Initiative: creating a new economic model

The Yasuní-ITT Initiative is a pioneer and a holistic proposal lead by the Government of Ecuador since 2007. Yasuní National Park, located in Ecuador´s Amazon rainforest, is on of the most important biodiversity hotspot in the planet, as well as home of indigenous cultures living in voluntary isolation. This presentation will explain the financial mechanism behind the Yasuní-ITT Initiative, which tends to indefinitely abstain from the extraction of millions of barrels of oil from the ITT field, preventing the emission of 407 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Strengthening Local Governance Systems, to improve Business Climate in the Mesoamerican Forest Sector

The forests of Mesoamerica impact on the quality of life, sustained economic growth and economic mobility of the rural poor and extremely poor populations. These ecosystems are also one of the main opportunities for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and comprise one of the most biodiversity-rich zones on the planet. However, the Mesoamerican region displays some of the highest deforestation and forest degradation rates in the world, coupled with the highest stratums of rural poverty and extreme poverty of the northern and central parts of the hemisphere.

Marine Conservation in the Southern cone of South America

During this event IUCN members in the South American region, led by FVSA (Argentina), will present the advances for key marine conservation initiatives in South Cone, included:

• the Patagonian Sea conservation initiative
• fisheries: by-catch, legislation, and relationship with private sector
• Coastal Protected Areas management. The case of Peninsula Valdes
• Climate change and krill fisheries in Antarctica

Coastal and Marine Issues in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean

1. Strengthening youth voices in marine conservation: Supporting the development of local leadership and triggering action for a sustainable future. 11:00 – 12:00

This activity will have the participation of young people from coastal communities in Mexico and Central America. They are linked to fishing and will present their opinions and experiences in subjects such as:

Estado Actual de las Prioridades y Vacíos de Conservación de los Ecosistemas, SINAP-Colombia

Existe información disgregada sobre identificación de prioridades de conservación en diversas escalas, con diferentes objetivos de conservación y bajo metodologías particulares. De allí la importancia de unificar criterios y metodologías existentes en las diferentes escalas, en donde se ha avanzado con la recopilación de 15 estudios de identificación de prioridades de conservación y aplicar metodologías en las escalas regional y departamental, para lo cual ya se cuentan con algunas herramientas técnicas nacionales, regionales y locales, que deben ser homogeneizadas.
