Marine (and coastal) protected areas and climate change in the Mediterranean

The session is dedicated to present the latest initiatives and publications of IUCN Med related to specific ecosystems and case studies in the Mediterranean and in North Africa:
• Atlas of Al Hoceima National Park (Morocco)
• Towards a representative network of Marine protected areas in Libya
• Mediterreanean Seagrass Meadows: Resilience and contribution to climate change mitigation
• Towards a representative network of marine protected areas in the Alboran Sea (Mediterranean Sea)
• Mediterranean submarine canyons: ecology and governance.

Parks and landscapes. Policies, planning and management

The main poster’s topic is the relationship between nature conservation policies and landscape policies, taking into account the strategic relevance of this theme in the IUCN´s debate, in the UNESCO policy, in the European Landscape Convention (Council of Europe, 2000) and its possible development at the world level: the focal question is to verify whether, and at which conditions, landscape policies may strengthen the role and effectiveness of Protected Areas and, inversely, whether Protected Areas can be a privileged field for the application of landscape policies.

Towards Mediterranean resilience: An adaptative model of governance

In recent times governance has become a matter of increasing interest in Mediterranean affairs particularly with respect to the conservation and management of biodiversity. Although the concept of governance may have various meanings within different contexts, it is important to focus on ways and means for improving the existing prescriptive and enforcement mechanisms for environmental protection of the Mediterranean terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems.

The Guadix Basin (Granada, Spain): two million years of geodiversity underpinning biodiversity.

The Guadix Basin (Granada, Spain) presents an exceptional Quaternary paleontological record of large mammals and a unique sedimentary record of climate and paleoenvironmental changes which are the basis for an innovative set of actions in this Mediterranean region of southwest Europe. The poster shows how well-planned management allows for the conservation and proper public use of highly-vulnerable and non-renewable paleobiological resources and modern semiarid badlands, both of them unique for Europe.

A novel fire restoration tool – in Mount Attavyros Natura 2000 site, island of Rhodes

The poster will present the LIFE08 NAT/GR/000533 project, entitled "Fire RestorAtion Methodology for MEditerranean Forests – environmental safety & sustainability of 4 interventions in the Rhodes NATURA 2000 site FRAMME", which was developed, with the ambition of covering the knowledge gap in contemporary science regarding management and restoration of fire afflicted Mediterranean forests.

ISEA - Standardizing the Effective Management of MPAs in Italy

Ministry of Environment and WWF-Italy have concluded an initiative to provide high-level training and practical support for the management of Italian MPAs. The project, named ISEA (Standardized Actions for the Effective Management of MPAs), aims to promote efficiency and effectiveness in the management of MPAs, as it has strengthened the network of Italian SPAMIs by ensuring each one meets basic requirements as called for under the Barcelona Convention:
