Estimating the economic value of Korea´s National Parks

With the title of the ‘Evaluation of Economic Value on the National Parks of South Korea’, the Knowledge Cafe will touch on such topics as the evaluation of protected areas, economic effects of tourism on local economies, benefit analysis of protected areas through a system dynamic model and evaluation of biodiversity values. With respect to these environmental benefit & cost analysis topics, a number of eminent experts will share their experiences and knowhow and come up with reasonable policy goal and means.

Land-cover change in the Mekong delta 2004-2009

Land cover in the Mekong Delta has changed dramatically since Vietnam was unified in 1975. Change has been particularly dramatic since the 1990s when government instructions led to the mass conversion of mangroves to shrimp ponds. Despite efforts to slow the loss of mangroves, the process continues. To support a range of projects on land and water use in the Mekong Delta, IUCN collaborated with Vietnam's Space Technology Institute to classify land cover change using SPOT multi-spectral images for 2004-05 and 2009-10.

Biodiversity Principles for Siting and Design of Hotels and Resorts in the Caribbean

To respond to the concerns expressed on many occasions by Caribbean IUCN Members and stakeholders about the impacts of hotels and resorts on biodiversity in the insular Caribbean, IUCN developed a set of Biodiversity Principles for Siting and Design of Hotels and Resorts. The Principles are targeted at all relevant stakeholders, including planning authorities, tourism development agencies, developers, investors, hotel managers and management companies, project managers and consultants, architects and construction firms.

Access and Benefit Sharing and Protected Areas: how are they linked?

What exactly is Access and Benefit Sharing and how does it work?
How will new policy and legal frameworks on ABS impact protected areas, and the indigenous peoples and local communities living in and around them?
What can conservation gain from ABS, what can ABS learn from protected areas, and where are the challenges to achieve these gains?

Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Mining in South Africa

The potential of mining to impact biodiversity is well known, but little has been done in South Africa, one of the world´s major mining countries, to assist mining companies to reduce their impacts on biodiversity and contribute positively to biodiversity conservation. Instead they have been expected to show initiative or follow international examples of good practice, such as the International Council on Mining and Metal´s (ICMM) Good Practice Guidance (GPG) for Mining and Biodiversity, which was developed through ICMM´s dialogue with IUCN.

Sub-Global Assessments: Tools and techniques for undertaking and using Ecosystem Assessments

With mounting socio-economic pressures and continued lack of appreciation of its true value to society, nature must stake its claim in the future of the planet. An ecosystem assessment is one such approach for this, where the findings of science concerning the causes of ecosystem change, their consequence for human well-being, and management and policy options are brought to bear on the needs of decision-makers.

Challenging Value Systems in Conservation

Conservation has its roots in an ethic which emphasised aesthetic and moral reasons for conservation but recently, greater attention has been given to identifying the economic value of biodiversity and market-based conservation mechanisms. However, individuals may support conservation for many reasons, such as the emotional value they place on a particular species or place. Alternatively, the relevance of biodiversity to daily life and the essential goods and services that ecosystems provide may not be understood.

Campaña Playa Botella

El uso de envases y bolsas de plástico se ha convertido en una grave problemática ambiental en todo el planeta. Se generan miles de millones de botellas cada año y en su gran mayoría llegan a contaminar la tierra, ríos y mares.

What role will the implementation of TEEB play in conservation efforts?

“There is an urgent need to incorporate ecosystem values into policy and national accounting systems… Ecosystem values must be a cornerstone of IUCN’s work”, as indicated in The IUCN Programme 2013-16 .

The idea of mainstreaming nature’s values is becoming a priority objective across institutions, governments, businesses and societies worldwide, due in large part to ‘The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity’ (TEEB) initiative.
