The Aluminum Stewardship Initiative and Business and Ecosystem Quiz

From 13:00 to 14:00, IUCN, Nespresso and Rio Tinto Alcan will present the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, a unique aluminium value chain initiative that will define and deliver the first Standard for Responsible Aluminium.

This event will be an opportunity for you to share your views with Nespresso, Rio Tinto Alcan and IUCN representatives, on the aims and key features of this new Initiative, and your suggestions on how to bring to the table additional players from the aluminium value chain.

It is Korea’s national heritage that is very important historically, culturally and industrially. Furthermore, Korean ginseng is Korea’s representative agricultural crop for special use whose excellent quality is recognized world wide and has been used as an important medicinal means among especially oriental countries for a long time. The history of Korean ginseng can be traced back more than 2,000 years.

Engaging business for conservation

Considering business impacts and dependencies on biodiversity, there is an urgent need for the conservation community to engage with business. This conservation campus session is aimed at conservation organizations and, in particular IUCN members, that wish to engage business in delivering conservation goals. The session will provide guidance on how to set up and run engagements with progressive businesses. NGOs with experience in such engagements as well as businesses working with conservation organizations will share their experiences and recommendations.

After a short and general introduction to the role of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), a professional film will be presented to the audience.

IUCN Red List of Ecosystems as an input for action priority setting

Summary of case studies illustrating the distinction between risk assessment (provided by the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems) and priority setting. In this session, we highlight how provision of ecosystem services can help guide the identification of priority actions for threatened ecosystem. These priority actions range between conservation to various land-use alternatives, including a focus on economics.

Biodiversity offsets: the conservation debate

The debate around biodiversity offsets as a potential conservation tool is involving a wide variety of stakeholders, from conservation organizations, academia, business, and governments. Despite several international organisations, lenders and governments are already moving to put public and finance policies in place to require and regulate biodiversity offsets, there are still many unsolved issues around biodiversity offset as a conservation tool.

Tackling the ecosystem challenge – business reflections on the Forum

Business is part of the solution to addressing ecosystem related challenges, so this Forum is an excellent opportunity for business to showcase and discuss what is currently being applied on the ground. This Happy Hour will end 5 days of events, all aiming at featuring, demonstrating and discussing the issue and possible approaches to address it.
