Providing incentives to enhance ecosystem services from biodiversity and promote conservation in the agricultural matrix.

Biodiversity provides key ecosystem services for farmers around the world, including pest control, pollination, and soil improvement. This biodiversity can reach surprisingly high levels, particularly in traditional farming systems. Agroecology is unraveling the ecological processes at work, but significant portions of the biodiversity involved remain undescribed.

Creating Resilient Eco-Travel Destinations in Protected Areas

This training course will develop guidelines for successfully establishing a resilient eco-travel destination in a protected area. It will outline the necessary steps to ensure the smallest ecological footprint while providing eco-tourists with a comfortable atmosphere to learn about and partake in the local conservation efforts. Experts in the field of eco-tourism will be invited to join in the discussion, and a print publication will be distributed.

Building capacity on Community Based Adaptation (CBA) to climate change in islands

IUCN is currently engaged in adaptation strategies to climate change to build resilience of communities, ecosystems and resource-dependent livelihoods in the face of climate change. Geographically widely distributed islands are considered to be unique and valuable ecosystems that are threatened by the impacts of climate change. These threats affect islands´ ecosystem functioning, underpinning livelihoods and human wellbeing.

Lebanon IUCN Committee: a One Program Approach towards a Greener Economy

The workshop will present some experiences of IUCN Member Organizations in Lebanon in the fields of conservation, sustainable development, and community outreach. Through several national and regional initiatives, the Lebanese IUCN Members have adopted eco-friendly approaches to responsible tourism, which resulted in the creation of green infrastructure/buildings, and green jobs.

Food Security -the neonicotinoid era of pest management: impacts on pollinators and entomofauna at large

Over the past 15 years neonicotinoid insecticides have rapidly grown to become the most widely used and fastest growing class of insecticides worldwide with a market share of 25%. Neonicotinoids (now also called neonics) act systemic: they enter the plant sap through the roots, making the whole plant permanently toxic to insects. Neonicotinoids are unprecedently toxic to beneficial insects such as pollinators. Neonicotionoids are neurotoxic and act cumulative. Neonicotionoids are unique in their harmfulness to insects in sub-lethal dose and chronic exposure.

Can a profitable business also be profitable for nature and create a virtuous circle?

The objective is to illustrate how a coffee business can integrate NGO´s nature conservation in its operations.
By partnering with Rainforest Alliance, using their nature conservation principles, the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ program integrates best practices specific to the protection of the environment that answer directly to biodiversity impacts.

Searching for resilience in sustainable development: learning journeys in conservation

The starting point for this workshop will be an interactive audio visual presentation of the key findings of Dr John Blewitt´s and Professor Daniella Tilbury (re)search for resilience in sustainable development. They have spent a year interviewing key people in the NGO, business and private sectors about resilience and the learning journeys they, their organisations, societies or cultures have undertaken. The people interviewed included major decision makers in business, public figures, activists, community workers, conservation specialists, media professionals, educators and many more.

What constitutes a resilient food system?

The rising demand for food, occurring against a backdrop of population growth and global environmental change is testing the resilience of food systems worldwide. Earth has to produce more food when the planet is close to tipping points that may transform it in ways that are undesirable from a human perspective.
