Mangroves provide an array of benefits to coastal communities, but in spite of their many values, mangroves in Asia continue to be converted to other land uses and sustainable financing for their protection has not been forthcoming.

IUCN Sri Lanka is the National Secretariat of Mangroves for the Future (MFF) regional initiative that is being implemented in the country since 2008.

The hope is that this field guide, along with its companion, volume 1, will be useful resources for snorkelers, divers, and all those interested in marine life in expanding their knowledge on identification of species found in the reef habitats of Sri Lanka. 

This booklet is an attempt to redress the lack of general knowledge on tidal flats and create awareness about their importance and the current threats facing these little-known ecosystems. 

Mangroves for the Future (MFF) is a partnership-based regional initiative promoting investments in coastal ecosystems that support sustainable development.

Increasing incidence and intensity of natural disasters and climate change are having over-arching impacts on the environment. Sustainable development is being undermined. Ecological services and their indirect economic values are frequently omitted from assessments.

This study was inspired by observations and experiences from post-tsunami (2004) mangrove planting and ‘restoration’ work in the country.

Scientific evidence suggests that variations in temperature, weather patterns and sea level will impact coastal ecosystems and communities.

This children’s book describes mangroves and all the essential services they provide: livelihoods for coastal communities, shelter for rich biodiversity, absorption of CO2, providing clean water, and protection from storms, hurricanes and tsunamis.

This document reports on progress made during the first year of the project (January 1--December 31 2007). A financial report covering the same period has been prepared and submitted along with this document.
