Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
In December 2017, the UN General Assembly decided to convene an intergovernmental conference to take place in 2018 (Res. 72.249, attached). The IGC has begun to consider elements proposed by the Preperatory Committee which include recommendations on points listed under paragraph 1 of the resolution. This completes the main measurable actions called for in the resolution.

IUCN played a strong role in supporting Members to achieve this result, through participation in PrepCom meetings, development and sharing of legal and technical resources, and facilitating discussions and sharing of ideas and expertise.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
The Preparatory Committee discussions were highly technical and there were many issues on which agreement was difficult. IUCN played a strong role in fostering dialogue and providing capacity building and evidence, as well as directly working with State partners to advance the negotiations.

Fundraising for IUCN's involvement in the international discussions has proven particularly difficult, and despite agreement that it is a priority issue, IUCN currently faces a funding crisis in regards to its work on BBNJ.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
This resolution is, for the most part, fully implemented with the adoption of UNGA Res. 72.249. Work will continue through the IGC process as IUCN continues to support negotiation and eventual adoption, ratification and implementation of an international instrument on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Are these actions planned for yet:
Yes
Status of implementation
