AccinDescripciónStatus
Influencia poltica/promocin de polticasASOC and its member organizations have been advocating for the creation of marine protected areas in many of the countries involved in Antarctic marine governance, and have attended the annual meetings of the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to advocate for MPA creation. On-going
Influencia poltica/promocin de polticasASOC continues to advocate for the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) to expand the system of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs). ASOC representatives attended a workshop prior to the 2019 ATCM along with representatives of Antarctic Treaty nations to discuss practical ways to implement a systematic conservation planning (SCP) process for creating additional ASPAs. On-going
Actividades tcnicas/cientficasASOC hosted scientific workshops on MPAs in China and Korea in the summer of 2019. Completed
Indique cuáles han sido los resultados/logros obtenidos en el marco de las actividades realizadas:
Many countries have stated support for designating new protected areas at the ATCM and CCAMLR. However, a systematic conservation planning process has yet to be initiated by the ATCM, and CCAMLR has not designated any new protected areas since the Ross Sea was designated in 2016.
¿Qué esfuerzos se están llevando a cabo para superar dichos obstáculos?:
Countries have differing opinions on what protected areas should look like and on how much time the ATCM and CCAMLR should spend discussing the creation of new protected areas.
