Capacity-building
Policy influencing/advocacy
Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
An initial set of guidelines for assessing the effectiveness of protection of wetland systems, including their environmental flows, is in development
The WCPA Freshwater Specialist Group has been collaborating with colleagues in the SSC and broader IUCN membership to address how to develop better guidelines for assessing and tracking the effectiveness of protected area management for inland waters. The current plan is to develop a set of standards that set a baseline for the extent to which inland systems are covered by protected areas, and then look at the effectiveness of management techniques, and suggest an updated set of guidelines.
Strengthening connections the Ramsar Convention Secretariat and the International Organisation Partners (IOPs) to ensure that the state of natural wetland deterioration is understood relative to that of man-made wetland systems covered by the Ramsar Convention.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
Identifying capacity to address this subject. In response we are working with SSC to develop a strong freshwater network across the IUCN Commissions.
