Policy influencing/advocacy
Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
Many activities have been carried out by IUCN Members, Commissions to raise awareness of, policy influencing for the elimination of, capacity building and scientific research on bycatch of ETP marine species. Publications have been published about the situation of those ETP marine species.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
The is one request 1. REQUESTS the Director General and the Species Survival Commission (SSC) to:
a. by 2022 produce a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of non-selective fisheries on ETP species, involving all Commissions and addressing small-scale artisanal to industrial fleets, as well as a full range of marine taxa (e.g. invertebrates, fishes, reptiles, mammals, seabirds); and
b. by 2023 support the implementation of effective policies involving all stakeholders, including governments, civil society, local communities, and the private sector, and development of a 'toolbox' of potential solutions adaptable to individual situations, to reduce and, wherever possible eliminate, bycatch of marine taxa, particularly of threatened and depleted species;
It's unclear who should be carrying out these activities at the IUCN Secretariat on behalf of the DG and the SSC. This issue needs to be discussed among the DG and the Chair of the SSC to decide on the action going forward.
