As far as the Secretariat FP is aware, the Global Indigenous Network for Aquaculture has not been created yet.
The Secretariat is requested to initiate pathways that support global indigenous efforts and exchanges to develop restorative approaches to aquaculture as a foundation for the development of sustainable food systems and abundance. As part of its work with the CEM E-bAG experts on the AquaCoCo project, the Ocean Team of the Centre for Conservation Action has been coordinating the development of an IUCN publication 'Aquaculture and Nature-based Solutions: identifying synergies between sustainable development of coastal communities, aquaculture, and marine and coastal conservation', ISBN: 978-2-8317-2187-3 DOI: https://doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.CH.2022.02.en
Abstract: Aquaculture production has very significantly increased in tonnage and value over the last decades. It is seen as a potential solution to replace the declining wild fishery stocks. This publication is a first attempt to examine aquaculture systems within the recent framework of the IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions (NbS). It reviews the critical contextual situation, highlighting major issues related to climate change, biodiversity losses and endangered marine ecosystems. It stresses the need for new approaches, such as the concept of NbS, to improve human ability to implement sustainable development and to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A session on NbS and restorative aquaculture was organised and held at IMPAC-5 (5th International MPA Congress) in February 2023 in Vancouver on aquaculture. It provided space to engage with other actors on this topic and to promote this resolution. It was well attended.
A scientific article was published in Frontiers in April 2023 to look at The IUCN Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions™ as a tool for enhancing the sustainable development of marine aquaculture.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
Lack time and resources (staff time) of the Secretariat FP to coordinate action to implement this resolution is the major challenge faced.
This resolution also counts on State Members to encourage and support private and public aquaculture facilities that implement best practices.
No further action were initiated in Q1-Q2 2023 on the implementation of this Resolution. No activity reports from Members have been submitted as of 11 Aug 2023.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
Reach to CEM and KUA as well as to the Small fishers federation in Sri Lanka, to establish an action plan to achieve the objectives stated in the resolution.
