The results of the investigation show the interconnection between jaguar trafficking and other serious crimes in Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Suriname. In addition, they show how the illegal trade of this species involves various routes from Latin America to China. The investigation reveals that the illegal trafficking of fangs, bones, and other parts of jaguars is linked to other serious crimes such as the sale of tropical wood, illegal gold mining, human trafficking, drug trafficking or money laundering carried out by criminal networks in Latin America and Asia. Researchers have detected two of the most powerful jaguar trafficking networks in Suriname, called “SA1” and “SA18”, which are run by criminals from China. The purpose of the investigation is to reveal the mechanisms and structure of the entire criminal supply chain, with special attention to illegal suppliers of wildlife products, traders, transporters, and sellers in China.
