Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM TYPOLOGY (GET)
- There has been a significant Convene/Networking effort, around the development of World Ecosystems Atlas, with GEO as the leader, and as result a beta version of atlas is publicly available .
- A Scientific committee for Global Ecosystem Typology has been formed, to make sure its regularly updated
- The GET has been incorporated in family of statistical classification of UN
- Crosswalk for Ecosystem typology between GET and national typologies is underway
RED LIST OF ECOSYSTEMS (RLE)
- Adopted as a headline indicator in GBF may encourage future adaptation at the national or regional level as stated in the resolution
- New version of IUCN Guidelines available
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
Translating the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology will be key for uptake,but has proven to be more complex than translating an ordinary publication from IUCN given that local interpretation of ecosystem names is very variable across countries with same language.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
- Mapping the Ecosystem Functional Groups and Global Ecosystems within the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology is key for upscaling its use and application
- Develop communication material and training for the wide use of the Typology including the finalizing the translation of GET into IUCN official languages (underway) and publication of crosswalk document (also underway)
- Support national authorities for the joint application of RLE and Natural Capital Accounting
