Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
Q1:
• Composition of the task team (TT) finalized, ensuring representativeness from indigenous peoples’ groups.
• Identification of potential sources of funds for the in-person meeting of the task team, including self-funding plus IUCN voluntary contributions.
• Kristen Walker (CI, CEESP) and Brendan Mackey (WCPA, WCEL, Griffith University) designated as co-chairs of the TT.
Q2
• Organization of the in-person meeting, drafting of preparatory documents (draft policy doc & briefing note for participants).
Q3
• TT in–person meeting in Gland, Aug 28-29. Attendants discussed on the content of the policy document (main Resolution output). Meeting output: updated draft policy document reflecting the discussions.
• Next steps: Co-chairs to continue working on the text, followed by rounds of internal revisions in Q4 2018. External consultation process with IUCN’s constituencies in 2019. Final version of policy document to be put under the consideration of IUCN’s Council in Oct 2019.
Q4
• Calendar of activities agreed in Q3 updated to February 2019 for circulating the policy document to the task team. The IUCN Secretariat & co-chairs had a call in December as opportunity to draw references from the CBD COP and UNFFC COP meetings in relation to primary forests.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
Not all the task team members attended the in-person meeting. The members who couldn’t attend are not engaging with the process as actively as expected.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
A calendar of events for 2019 would be useful to ensure that the task team takes advantage of opportunities to meet at international meetings, forums, etc.
Design and implement a communications plan to raise visibility of the topic of primary forests on IUCN’s platforms (website) and other international/regional platforms, with the direct input and contribution from task team members
Are these actions planned for yet:
No
Status of implementation
