Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
BMU Germany has elaborated a target agreement for peatland protection between the German national state and the federal states (by the end of 2019); important aspects of this agreement were introduced into a climate protection law (spring 2019). Elaboration of a national peatland protection strategy and a peat protection strategy within the running legislation period is expected by the end of 2020. More broadly, a report has been produced by the CEM specialist group/IUCN UK Peatlands Programme to catalogue the baseline status of existing peatland strategies globally. Strategies were identified through a combination of research and questionnaires which were distributed via the IUCN National Committees and global peatland networks. The CEM Peatland Specialist Group (led by the IUCN UK Peatland Programme) has been engaging with other nations on strategic development and will continue to showcase existing examples and support the development of new strategies. Promotion of the IUCN Resolution continues through our engagement with other international partners in the United Nations, Ramsar, Wetlands International and the Global Peatlands Initiative. Baseline monitoring has highlighted the existence of at least 27 strategies for peatland conservation, restoration and sustainable management globally, with a further 5 strategies in development.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
In Germany, a challenge has been gaining support of landusers for rewetting dry peatlands; this has been overcome by setting up structural funding instruments for the conversion from dry to wet landuse on peatlands. Other challenges faced by the CEM specialist group have been establishing new contacts in peatland nations where we have not historically worked has been challenging: there are still some gaps in the data which they hope to fill by continuing the monitoring of global peatland strategies through the GPI in support of their Global Peatlands Assessment (2020).
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
Existing strategies will be highlighted through the production of a ‘Demonstrating success: strategic action for peatlands’ publication (produced through the CEM/IUCN UK Peatland Programme in 2020/21). Also there are plans to continue to promote the international co-ordination of peatland action through existing resolutions (IUCN, Ramsar, UN) at key international events throughout 2019/20 e.g. COP25, IUCN WCC, COP26
Are these actions planned for yet:
