Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
An extensive consultation process on the draft NbS global standard was carried out in 2019, involving over 800 individuals from commissions, membership and secretariat, spanning over 100 countries. IUCN members such as SFI have provided technical feedback on criteria and indicators of the standard. Also, Commission on Ecosystem Management has a dedicated group of members working with secretariat on finalising the standard drafting. Standard will be presented at Council Feb 2020 for adoption and endorsement of members in the IUCN WCC June 2020. Additionally, IUCN supported the development of NbS concept as a dedicated track for the UN SG CC summit, conducted various side events at the UNFCCC COP25 and has a line up of high level plus technical session for the WCC, 2020 that were accepted.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
Maintaining IUCN's leadership and visibility as the originator of NbS is an ongoing challenge, especially with UNEP's recent interest in the concept, with which it has been advocating and fundraising on NbS. Additionally, the misinterpretation and mis-use of the concept has led to the standard development as well as a greater need for IUCN to be technically available to support NbS uptake. For this, additional resources are being sought from IUCN framework partners.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
Continued socialisation of the concept, with its correct definition and interpretation, improved communication and messaging on how NbS can support addressing the biodiversity crisis, further examples and ideas on workable policy models as NbS is a very cross cutting and integrated approach, often involving topics for which multiple ministries need to work together.
Are these actions planned for yet:
