FormationOn World Mangrove Day, the Global Mangrove Alliance (http://www.mangrovealliance.org/) and partners were proud to launch the Global Mangrove Watch (https://www.globalmangrovewatch.org/). The Global Mangrove Watch is the world’s most comprehensive mangrove monitoring tool: an online platform that provides synthesized remote sensing data and tools, built to catalyse the action needed to protect and restore mangroves worldwide. It gives universal access to real-time data on where and what changes there are to mangroves around the world, making it simple to calculate net changes in mangrove cover as well as calculate estimates of blue carbon. This information is automatically conveyed into easy-to-understand visuals and available to immediately download. This will be used by policymakers as key decision-making tool and catalyst for mangrove action globally, and will also be used by the GMA to track progress towards the target of increasing mangrove cover worldwide 20% by 2030. Activits visant influencer et/ou promouvoir les politiquesRecognizing the important role of marine and coastal ecosystems in climate change, IUCN is a founding member of the Global Mangrove Alliance, working towards the goal of 20% increase in mangrove cover by 2030 for the purpose of climate mitigation and adaptation, as well as human well-being and biodiversity.Completed
Activits visant influencer et/ou promouvoir les politiquesTogether with the Global Mangrove Alliance and Save Our Mangroves Now, we have highlighted the critical role of marine and coastal ecosystems at CBD and UNFCCC conferences. This advocacy led to the thematic focus of UNFCCC COP 25 being “The Blue COP“, emphasizing the role of the ocean, coastal areas and ecosystems for climate action, including on the thematic area of adaptation through the Nairobi Work Programme. As part of the NWP Expert Group on Oceans and Climate Adaptation, IUCN supported the drafting of the NWP’s scoping paper on adaptation of the ocean, coastal areas, and ecosystems (https://unfccc.int/sites/default/files/resource/Scopingpaper_Final version.pdf).Completed
