The IUCN Secretariat has initiated a number of fundraising approaches throughout the year, in collaboration with the SSC.
This included organising the IUCN Patrons of Nature Annual Meeting in New York, where the IUCN President, the SSC Chair and the IUCN Secretariat presented the Red List to the IUCN Patrons and invited guest. A first pledge was received by Prince Albert II to support the Red List. Discussions are underway with other Patrons of Nature.
At the request of the Director General, an allocation of CHF200k was approved by the IUCN Council to support the Red List Unit as well as relevant marketing products.
A GEF proposal was approved during the final quarter of 2022 (US$2m) in support of 'provisioning the biodiversity data behind global goals for nature'. This project will deliver on some of the priorities set out in the Red List Strategic Plan - including the production of an automated Red List index provided on demand. The contribution will support urgent assessment needs (500 fungi species, 1,777 freshwater fishes, 1,000 marine fish species (gobies) as well as 500 dung beetle species) to be added the IUCN Red List. The support will include exploiting new technologies and applications eg current and historical Area of Habitat maps for selected terrestrial groups incorporated into the IUCN Red List website, enhanced functionality in the Species Information Service allowing for importing and exporting of national Red List endemics.
Other funds secured in 2022 for the Red List were secured from the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (through SSC), the IKEA foundation as well from IBAT contributions. Further negotiations were underway during the final quarter with a private foundation and a company for Red List assessment work as well as some more general support.

Clear understanding and agreement on the medium and longer term funding needed to sustain the Red List (staffing, improved functionalities, assessments, etc.)

Continued collaboration with SSC and IUCN State Members. Key to demonstrate the value proposition and better understanding of the Red List (importance in the context of the CBD GBF, nature disclosure (TNFD), nature positive, etc.).
