Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
After setting up the project and the governance structure at the end of 2022:
1.Three meetings of the 20y- Strategic Vision Steering Committees (SC) were held (Dec. 2022; March 2023 and May 2023) to address: i) the structure of the 20y- SV which was approved (Dec. 2022); ii) the review of the drafts of Chapter 1 (analysis of IUCN today) and Chapter 2 (External situational and trends analysis); and the draft of Chapter 3 (IUCN on the pathway for the future to 2045); (see attached minutes)
2.A full report on progress made on the implementation of the recommendation from the 2019 External Review on aspects of IUCN´s governance was elaborated in coordination with the Governance Manager and the GCC Task Force on Governance (December 2022).
3.A workplan for the consultation with Members has been drafted in close coordination with the Membership Unit to also include regular meetings of the Global Group of National and Regional Committees.
4.A survey was carried out with the members of the SC (June 2023) to provide inputs on: i) how IUCN should be recognized in 20 years, ii) priorities of IUCN to orient its scope and increase its impact based on the opportunities and challenges of conservation on the way to 2045; iii) strategic direction; iv) implications (finance, governance, membership model, among others)
5.The progress made on the design of the 20y-SV was presented to wider Secretariat leadership during its planning and budgeting workshop 1 and; as well as during the sessions of the Council meeting (Council 109).
6.The Council Meeting 109 (C109) of May 2023 requested “i) the Chair of FAC and the Treasurer to provide their report to the 20- year Strategy Steering Committee; ii) the Director General to integrate key findings from the FAC Finance Review and Financial Governance Review into the situational analysis and other documents that feed into developing the 20-year strategy”. It also “Encourages the 20-year Strategic Vision to take into account the Knowledge Products roadmap, as well as the Knowledge Management vision and strategy. It was also agreed that i) Chapter 1 and 2 need additional work; and need to be socialized -for inputs; and ii) the timeline be expanded by 6 months to give time to the SC and other constituencies to provide their inputs
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
In accordance with the Congress Decision itself, the Director General (DG) is the Project manager of this project. Due to the DG’s resignation in early 2023 and resulting DG transition period, the project has stalled. The draft Chapters 1 and 2 needed to be refined as required by the IUCN Council; both Chapters are currently (August 2023) being re-drafted. To reflect these delays and challenges, the project workplan and roadmap was revised. The revised Chapters 1 and 2 and the workplan will be tabled to the SC for approval in Q3.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
• Improvement of background documents (Chapters 1 and 2) up to October 2023
