WCC 2020 Res 116 - Progress Report

Convening: Secretariat (IPC) organized a virtual briefing session before the CBD Geneva meetings with IUCN State Members to run through IUCN's key positions; Secretariat launched a webinar series "the last sprint before COP15" (https://www.iucn.org/events/webinar/iucn-webinar-series-last-sprint-cbd-cop15 ); Parties to CBD, IUCN Members and others have joined and feedback has been positive. The French National Committee has also organised webinars and gatherings to socialize key positions and views on the Post-2020 GBF including on the issue of 30x30. A webinar of the francophone network of IUCN was organised in November 2022 aiming at clarifying positions and in order to rally efforts before COP15.

Communication/raising awareness: The Secretariat has developed numerous materials, created and populated a dedicated Post-2020 GBF webpage compiling all information about IUCN's engagement with this process - including but not limited to position papers -, has prepared and released IUCN statements and blogs before and after the CBD meetings this year, etc. The French NC has also been actively engaging in this space: Dans le cadre de la conférence « Décrypter l’international sur la route vers la COP15 biodiversité » de la Plateforme Biodiversité 2020 de l’IDDRI (6ème réunion), un bilan du Congrès mondial de la nature et un décryptage de la motion 40 ont été présentés par la Présidente du CF UICN. IUCN Members have also actively been engaging in outreach activities to emphasize the need to adopt an ambitious post-2020 GBF (e.g. WWF, TNC, BirdLife and members of the Global Goal for Nature group/ now Nature Positive Initiative -September2023)). Furthermore, at COP 15, IUCN has organized or was involved in over 50 events throughout the duration of the COP. In addition, IUCN partnered with other organisations (most of which are IUCN Members) to host a Nature Positive Pavilion with the aim of supporting the adoption and implementation of an ambitious Nature Positive GBF. The pavilion hosted +120 sessions, delivered by over 80 different organizations to discuss, inter alia, the role of business, how to mobilize finance, the role of IPLCs, and share leanings and experiences from around the world.

In 2023, IUCN has prepared a wrap-up session of its “Last Sprint to COP 15” webinar. This session presented how IUCN’s Programme and tools contribute to the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework. It included a mapping of the connections between the IUCN Programme and existing Resolutions which connect directly to the GBF, and the GBF Goals and Targets, a presentation of the Global Species Action Plan and of the Contributions for Nature Platform, as well as potential contributions to the further development of the GBF monitoring framework, among other things. Finally, IUCN is also considering the best way to support countries in the process of updating their NBSAPs before CBD COP16. An NBSAPs strategy has been developed (linked to RES043 as well).

Policy influencing: Most of the time spent by IUCN Secretariat staff in the implementation of this Resolution before COP15 is linked to policy advocacy - development, consultation and release of IUCN position papers and technical papers/briefs to substantiate IUCN's position; development of an overview document linking the Marseille Resolutions and our Programme to Post-2020 (IUCN's mandate); socializing IUCN's position through presentations, etc. All of these documents are available on the dedicated CBD COP 15 webpage: https://www.iucn.org/events/large-event/iucn-cbd-cop15. Here again the French NC has also reported numerous activities. Furthermore, IUCN has sent a One Programme delegation, strong of 95 delegates to the CBD COP15 in Montreal, where it delivered the key messages contained in Resolution 7.116, including through statements from the floor and during the High-Level Segment.

In 2023, IUCN has been engaged with many Members and partners, under the leadership of WWF International, in discussions around the transition from the Global Goal for Nature to the Nature Positive initiative (launched 6 September, 2023). As part of that initiative, IUCN will continue to strive for a GBF that is "fit for purpose" and which paves the way for a nature positive world by 2030.
