Planning sustainable cities : UN-Habitat practices and perspectives

Complete Title:
Planning sustainable cities : UN-Habitat practices and perspectives
Non IUCN Publication
Abstract:

This publication presents a strong argument for innovating urban planning to address the contemporary challenges of rapid urbanization and poverty. It illustrates how UN-HABITAT has worked in a variety of contexts to apply urban planning and design to contribute to sustainable human settlements development, slum prevention, post-disaster and post-conflict reconstruction, and new environmental and social challenges, such as climate change and urban violence. The work undertaken at country and project level, and the initiatives at global level are presented in a structured way, to highlight specific thematic areas and approaches, and to illustrate how work to shape the urban environment and the policy and processes that determine it, have contributed to more sustainable and equitable urban development. The overview points to a rich experience, which warrants both further analysis and reflection, as well as concrete steps for its dissemination and development within the international debate on sustainable urbanisation.
