Implementation
Indicate and briefly describe any actions that have been carried out to implement this Resolution:
ActionDescription
Convene stakeholders/NetworkingThe Ad-Hoc Working Group on the Development of European National Committees was established in 2013 and regularly met, through monthly teleconferences and annual face-to-face meetings since then, to jointly work on awareness raising project and governance processes (including the Implementation Plan of the IUCN Programme in Europe, and the 2015 European RCF).
Education/Communication/Raising awarenessThe European Working Group on National Committee published a Toolkit for the creation and management of National Committees in Europe, showcasing the diversity of Committees currently existing in the region, and inviting new countries to join the movement, as well as the booklet "Joining forces for nature", a postcard-type booklet showcasing the work of Members in the region.
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
The existence of a working group of National Committees in Europe has proven to be a very effective way to strengthen the relationship between the different components of the Union. The excellent relationship between the Secretariat (through the now abolished European Coordination Unit) and National Committees allowed the group to work jointly and closely on a series of strategic processes for IUCN in the region (including the Implementation Plan of the IUCN Programme 2017-2020). Through giving some visibility to the work of Members, the Working Group has also strengthen the feeling of "belonging" of Members, within the Union, allowing National Committees to play the key role they have been established for. The successful European RCF, in December 2015, shows the strength of Union when working as such, through a close collaboration between the Secretariat and the Membership (through National Committees).
In the few occasions where the European Working Group was presented outside of the region, it was considered as an example to be replicated in other IUCN regions. The establishment of a global Working Group of National/Regional Committees was also seen as a useful way forward.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
The suppression of the European Coordination Unit left the European Working Group without a "home" in the Secretariat. Support from the Union Development Group has been sought, especially for the establishment of a global working group of NC/RC.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions are planned for the implementation of this Resolution:
Future ActionDescription
Convene stakeholders/NetworkingWith support from the Union Development Group, a global working group of NC/RC will be established to build on the European experience and further strengthen NC/RC. A pilot test will be done at the beginning of 2016, and the Working Group will be officially established on the occasion of the World Conservation Congress, Hawaii 2016.
Education/Communication/Raising awarenessA second edition of the postcard booklet will be produced for the World Conservation Congress, Hawaii 2016.
