Convene stakeholders/NetworkingThe EABCN convened a Working Group Meeting to discuss the joint research projects among member institutions in April 2015 (Seoul)
Convene stakeholders/NetworkingThe EABCN organized a steering committee meeting for the revision of its Rules of Procedure (ROP) and for the election of staff of EABCN in July 2015 (Jeju). Following these two meetings, the secretariat office of EABCN has opened in October 2015 hosted at the Korea National Arboretum.
Scientific/technical activities
Scientific/technical activitiesIn June 2015, the EABCN held a workshop in Japan at the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) to develop a monitoring strategy and build capacity for research on the vulnerable plants to climate change in East Asia. 80 participants from 4 countries (Korea 12, Japan 65, Russia 3 and Mongol 3) attended the workshop and a field trip was organized as well at Mt. Tsukuba. FFPRI...
Scientific/technical activitiesThe EABCN published three books together with the Korea National Arboretum during 2014-2015: 1. Important Plants of East Asia : Plants tell stories (2014) 2. Important Plant of East Asia II : Endemic Plant Stories (2015) 3. Resilient Dwarf Relict Plants Tell Stories (2015)
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
The East Asia Biodiversity Conservation Network (EABCN) was formed in 2014 to promote biodiversity conservation activities, joint research and to build capacity on Plant conservation in East Asia region. The EABCN was officially launch in October 2014 following the signature of a multilateral MOU in Pyeongchang with 6 members (5 countries and 6 institutions): China (CAS and South China Botanic Garden), Japan (Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute), Republic of Korea (Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, Mongolia (National University of Mongolia) and Russia (Botanical Garden Institute of Far East Branch, Institute of Applied Ecology). The EABCN focuses on three main areas: 1. Development of Biodiversity Inventories in East Asia; 2. Conservation for vulnerable plants to climate change; 3. capacity building of its members. In 2015, the EABCN was further developed and now its secretariat is hosted at the Korea National Arboretum. The EABCN published three books together with the Korea National Arboretum during 2014-2015 and organized several international workshops on Plant conservation in 2015.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
Currently the EABCN is mostly supported financially by the Korea National Arboretum and more funding from the other members of the EABCN is needed to catalyze plant conservation in this region
Identify and briefly describe what future actions are planned for the implementation of this Resolution:
Future ActionDescription
Scientific/technical activitiesA web platform to support plant re-introduction in the Region will developed in 2016 and a plant re-introduction workshop supported by the Korea National Arboretum will be held in October 2016 in Jeju. The goal is to increase the capacity of arboretum staff for re-introduction plant species in Korea.
Scientific/technical activitiesThe IUCN SSC Korean Plant SG is currently working on assessing the risk of the extinction of Korean Plants. The Red List of Selected Vascular Plants in Korea will be published in 2016 thanks to the support of the Korea National Arboretum.
