Implementation
Indicate and briefly describe any actions that have been carried out to implement this Resolution:
ActionDescriptionStatus
FundraisingJack London Park Partners receives no funds from State Parks to subsidize the management and operation of the park, depending entirely on volunteers, private donations, park fees, and revenue from events hosted there to execute programming, maintain the grounds and administer operations. Events hosted there include guided nature hikes, bird watching, and Broadway Under the Stars, a series of summer musical events that are often reserved far in advance and bring in much of the year's revenue. They host many private events as well, including weddings, parties, and picnics. On-going
Policy influencing/advocacyBy creating and passing the bill AB42, introduced by Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), nonprofit groups and community members became able to to take over park operations from the state.Completed
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
Since 2013, revenue has increased from $273,541 to $529,489.00, an increase of 94%. Use of the park has increased, with more locals visiting in addition to outside visitors.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
Being the first park in the area to make the change over to community operation, plans, boards, and policies had to be drawn up. There were no frameworks in place. The passing of the bill which allowed private groups to take over was critical. Securing funding was also a necessity, knowing donations wouldn't keep them operational indefinitely.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions are planned for the implementation of this Resolution:
Future ActionDescription
FundraisingCreating more programs and events so they might become 100% self funded in the next decade.
OtherRecovery from recent fires which burned through the area in October 2017, specifically, supporting their sister park, Sugarloaf Ridge, which lost approximately 75% of its natural lands to the fires.
