Describe the results/achievements of the activities
ASOC and its member organizations have been advocating for Antarctic Treaty Parties and Member countries of the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to adopt and implement networks of terrestrial and marine protected areas in Antarctica. The Ross Sea Marine Protected Area was designated by CCAMLR in 2016 and came into force in 2017. The MPA is 1.55 million square kilometers in size, 1.12 million square kilometers of which is no-take.
Challenges/obstacles encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and measures taken
Some States, parties to CCAMLR, are not in Cavour of setting up MPAs in the Southern Ocean and the Antarctica region.
Future actions / activities needed for the implementation of this Resolution
ASOC will continue advocacy at CCAMLR to designate MPAs in East Antarctica, the Weddell Sea and the Antarctic Peninsula. We will also continue to advocate for the expansion of the terrestrial protected areas network at Antarctic Treaty meetings so that the continent's biodiversity can also be preserved.
