Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
International Association for Falconry and the Conservation of Birds of Prey (IAF) has been an active focal point for the implementation of this recommendation to raise awareness by publishing a booklet titled 'Preventing the Electrocution of Birds on Power Infrastructure', and translated into 15 different languages. This work is on-going.
IAF has also been raising awareness on the issues through international and regional conferences, as well as international conventions such as Convention on Migratory Species, CITES.
IAF has also tried to do fundraising for carrying out more work and establish more projects in Mongolia and Central Asia, and Morocco.
Scientific/Technical activities: IAF co-financed a research on Saker migration using satellite tracking with the aim to study the impact of electrocution on migratory birds in 2016 and 2017. The findings suggested that electrocution can influence populations which have breeding range far away from the areas where electrocution incidents occur.
What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
It is challenging to raise the issue of electrocution of birds on power infrastructre to decision makers and financial institutions who fund major infrastructure projects. More support from all IUCN members and IUCN secretariat to raise the issue to a higher level.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
IAF will actively continue their work on this recommendation in collaboration with other IUCN member organization such as Birdlife International to raise more awareness to prevent electrocution and collision impacts of power infrastructure on birds, the future activities include:
Continue education/communications and awareness raising activities: IAF is in discussion with various international broadcaster to broadcast the documentary on electrocution to raise public awareness at the global level as well as the awareness of leaders, decision makers, financial and governmental bodies. IAF also plans to have a joint action with Birdlife International to produce more awareness materials to address impacts of electrocution as well as collisions. In 2018, IAF will promote the electrocution booklet in 15 languages with a special event and PR activities.
Fundraising: IAF will continue fundraising efforts to address the dangerous lines in Central Asia and to continue research on Saker migration.
Field activities: IAF will continue the research on Saker migration to study the long-distance impacts of electrocution.
Policy influencing and advocacy: IAF would like to have support from IUCN to influence policy change of financing construction of electricity infrastructure using IUCN network and power of influencing.
