Policy influencing/advocacy
Scientific/technical activities
Describe the results/achievements of the actions taken:
The working group for implementation of this resolution comprises of the IUCN Secretariat, the SSC Chair's Office and member-assigned focal points from EWT, SEO and RSPB. The group had a few group calls and many exchanges of emails to focus on the major component of this resolution - a global situation analysis on the impacts of poisons on wildlife.

AS this is a major resolution which was merged from three motions, therefore it has large components. However, members have been working and contributing greatly to implement this resolution from a wide range of activities.

The overall progress of the resolution is going well, and activities are on-going.
Major achievements have been on capacity building. EWT trained more than 2000 individuals in 8 countries in east and southern Africa in Poisoning Response, which led to a number of notabe successes in areas targetd for training with significant reduction in the number of mortalities recorded during incidents where training has been used and effective poisoning strategies have been implemented.

Conducted and completed a desk study on global poisoning of wildlife.

Fundraising: major efforts in convening the working group to develop a project proposal for the Cambridge Conservation Initiative's Collaborative Fund but failed to secure the required partner for the proposal.

What challenges/obstacles have been encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and how were they overcome :
One of the challenges in 2018 was to raise fund for the Global Situation Analysis which 'REQUESTS the Director General, Commissions and Members to undertake a global situation analysis regarding the impacts of poisons on wild fauna, identifying priorities for conservation action in terms of threatened species, types of poisoning and geographical areas and gathering evidence of successful interventions to prevent poisoning. As reported in the previous year, IUCN Secretariat does not have a programme of work on compatting poisoning of wildlife and there is no budget to carry out this task of the resolution.
The Secretariat focal point together with the SSC's focal point had many conversations with the member-assigned focal points to find ways to fundraise and find experts within the SSC to carry out the work. This issue was also brought up to the Steering Committee of the SSC and was agreed by the Committee that it is an important task to be done and it is necessary to find some donors to fund this. However, there is not a dedicated staff time for implementation of resolutions from the Secretariat to raise fund for this work, it remains a real challenge. It is important to have support from the Council to find ways to allocate funds for activities requested to the DG and Commissions from resolutions.
Briefly describe what future actions are needed for the implementation of this Resolution:
Continue to try to raise fund for the Global Situation Analysis, support is needed from the Council to find donors who would like to fund this work.
Partners continue to carry out elements of the Resolution
EWT as one of the organisation implementing this resolution will focus on the following activities:
- Capacity building: expanding the network of trainers
- Networking: participating in CMS Wildlife Poisoning Working Group and the southern African Wildlife Poisoning Working Group
- Policy influecning: Engaging at the national level with governments to have more effective enforcement of existing policies and regulations and to implment various resolutions related to wildlife poisoning
- Scientific and techincal activities: improving capacity with regarding to sample collection and analysis; facilitating more effective capture and collation of wildlife poisoning data from all range countries.

Note: It is important to have budget allocated to resolutions which ask the IUCN DG to carry out certain activities, otherwise, it's difficult to implement.
Are these actions planned for yet:
Yes
Status of implementation
Status of implementation for this Resolution:
On-going: implementation consisting of repetitive, recurrent action (attending meetings, reporting, etc.)
