Implementation
Indicate and briefly describe any actions that have been carried out to implement this Resolution:
ActionDescriptionStatus
Policy influencing/advocacyASOC and its member organizations have been advocating for the creation of marine protected areas in many of the countries involved in Antarctic marine governance, and have attended the annual meetings of the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to advocate for MPA creation. On-going
Policy influencing/advocacyASOC continues to advocate for the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) to expand the system of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs). ASOC representatives attended a workshop prior to the 2019 ATCM along with representatives of Antarctic Treaty nations to discuss practical ways to implement a systematic conservation planning (SCP) process for creating additional ASPAs. On-going
Scientific/technical activitiesASOC hosted scientific workshops on MPAs in China and Korea in the summer of 2019. Completed
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken:
Many countries have stated support for designating new protected areas at the ATCM and CCAMLR. However, a systematic conservation planning process has yet to be initiated by the ATCM, and CCAMLR has not designated any new protected areas since the Ross Sea was designated in 2016.
What challenges have you encountered in implementing this Resolution and what measures have you taken to overcome them?:
Countries have differing opinions on what protected areas should look like and on how much time the ATCM and CCAMLR should spend discussing the creation of new protected areas.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions are planned for the implementation of this Resolution:
Future ActionDescription

Scientific/technical activitiesASOC will continue to host scientific/technical workshops related to the creation of protected areas.
