ASOC and its member organizations have been advocating for the creation of marine protected areas in many of the countries involved in Antarctic marine governance, and have attended the annual meetings of the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to advocate for MPA creation.

ASOC continues to advocate for the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) to expand the system of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs). ASOC representatives attended a workshop prior to the 2019 ATCM along with representatives of Antarctic Treaty nations to discuss practical ways to implement a systematic conservation planning (SCP) process for creating additional ASPAs.
