2021 and into 2022:
Related to pollution from invasive alien species (IAS) which has been built on our engagement with IMO through the CBD interagency liaison group on IAS. In relation to IAS - IUCN are a ‘strategic partner’ on the IMO GEF funded ‘GloFouling’ project (note this was the same for the GEF GloBallast project – but this was before my time), and through this we have supported them in developing the guidelines on Biofouling Management for Recreational Boating (which was identified as a key gap in IMO guidelines). We unfortunately don’t get any funding to support our engagement with this project but we try and align work where we can. One of my team recently attended the launch of the guidelines at a recent GF R&D event last week, and we will continue to work with IMO on Glofouling and other areas on IAS where we can. FYI – the guidelines are being picked by the IUCN Sports for Nature initiative and will be promoted through this as it gets going.
