Description and results/achievements of activities:
SFI engaged with the University of Georgia to assess the impact of the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard on water quality and biodiversity in the region. SFI’s Forest Management Standard has four objectives which seek to positively impact water quality and biodiversity. Objective 1 has four indicators that address the conservation and promotion of biodiversity, including forests of exceptional conservation value, within a mill’s wood and fiber supply area. Objective 2 requires the use of best management practices to protect water quality and a system to monitor their implementation. Objective 3 requires a mill to promote the use of qualified logging and resource professionals to protect water quality and measures to conserve biodiversity, and Objective 6 has requirements addressing the training and education of these logging and resources professionals.
Status
On-going
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken
There have been multiple publications that stem from this project that indicate the impact of the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard on biodiversity and water quality. While the project in on-going, the results include multiple publications suggesting that water quality in wood baskets which have a higher number of SFI mills has improved over time relative to wood baskets where SFI mills are not present.
