Activities carried out to implement this Resolution
Activity
Education/Communication/Raising awareness
Description and results/achievements of activities:
KUA’s primary outreach on this Reso has been within its network and in informing IPO or ICCA Consortium partners. KUA’s ED is also a CEESP Steering Committee Theme Chair along with a co-chair whose focus is on conservation, spirituality and religion who has an interest in supporting the effort as well.
KUA also worked with CEL to strategize about how to move the Reso forward within the union and among individual members. Partnering with Haub a draft strategy to develop an IUCN truth and reconciliation working group to investigate renunciation and its implementation for best practices of care for Mother Earth. This draft was submitted to the CEESP Cahir and IUCN Council member who recently shared with the Council where it was subsequently adopted.
KUA’s ED will be going to Costa Rica for a CEESP meeting next week to speak on the Reso. He will also meet with IUCN Meso-American members who work with Environmental Defenders. The hope is Reso 119 can also serve as a tool to better support and protect them.

Description and results/achievements of activities:
Since the last activity report issued in September 2022, the Center for Environmental Legal Studies (CEL) has broadly focused on communicating the substance of Resolution 119 to IUCN members, governments, non-governments, and Indigenous Peoples’ organizations. Additionally, CEL has participated in external regional and international forums to communicate IUCN’s adoption of Resolution 119 and its significance.
Spreading the information of Resolution 119, members of CEL have participated in the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law in the Summer of 2022 and the Normandy Chair for Peace Summer School program in fall 2022. More recently, CEL participated in a side event hosted by the Normandy Chair for Peace at the 22nd United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in the Spring of 2023.
In addition to its participation in the forums, CEL has continued its relationship with Lenape Center, an Indigenous non-profit organization. CEL has continued discussions with Lenape Center about Doctrine of Discovery repudiation and implementation. CEL has also produced and circulated several briefs and memoranda on Resolution 119. In addition, CEL has published information about Resolution 119 as a part of the American Indian Law Alliance’s Indigenous Values Initiative.
