Describe the results/achievements of the activities
IUCN WCEL, through the Agreement on Plastic Pollution Task Force, and Secretariat (Centre for Policy and Law, Ocean Team) have coordinated with and advised a number of countries and other organizations on relevant aspects of governance design for the future Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution Prevention negotiations and regime convergence aspects of existing pollution treaties, such as the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Conventions) and the Minamata Convention on Mercury, as well as the 2023 agreed Global Framework on Chemicals. Main objective: Coherence with the Global Biodiversity Framework, especially its Target 7 on Pollution.
Challenges/obstacles encountered in the implementation of this Resolution and measures taken
The negotiations for a future Science Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution Prevention were 2024 in a crucial phase (decision on the establishment is expected in 2025), and the COP decisions on pesticides and other related chemicals and products under the different Conventions are connected to this.
Future actions / activities needed for the implementation of this Resolution
Continue consultative and advisory roles in these fora, particularly in the implementation phases of the Global Framework on Chemicals and the future Science Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution Prevention, as well as at the BRS-COP 2025. Further, a stronger cooperation with Agriculture/Food security team within IUCN will be explored, also on how projects could be supported under the broader chemicals umbrella as agreed through the Global Framework on Chemicals.
Are these actions/activities planned?
Yes
