Describe any challenges encountered in implementing this Resolution and the measures taken
One of the challenges IUCN ROWA may face is environmental threats, such as (climate change and urban expansion), which could lead to the degradation of ecosystems in deserts and semi-deserts. Also, local community participation may be difficult in some areas, where there might not be enough awareness or resources to support active involvement in conservation efforts.
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken
IUCN West Asia (ROWA) efforts are strongly aligned with the IUCN Resolution on the Deserts of the Middle East, adopted in 1966. IUCN ROWA contributes to achieving the goal of protecting these unique ecosystems by supporting governments in establishing large national parks and protected areas in deserts and semi-deserts. Through its work in scientific assessments, capacity-building, and policy influencing, IUCN ROWA helps ensure the effective management of these areas and their protection from modern threats. The union also promotes sustainable tourism and raises awareness about the importance of conserving these ecosystems using sustainable approaches.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions/activities are planned for the implementation of this Resolution
Future action / activity
Policy influencing/advocacy
Description
IUCN ROWA plays a crucial role in influencing environmental policies by collaborating with governments to develop conservation policies and support strategies for protected areas. It encourages countries like Saudi Arabia to develop protected areas and implement IUCN standards, such as the IUCN Green List to assess reserves in the kingdom.
