Description and results/achievements of activities:
In September 2024, we initiated efforts in collaboration with İzmir Institute of Technology to restore the freshwater ecosystems in the Gediz Delta in Türkiye and strengthen sustainable management practices. This project aims to restore wetland meadow habitats within the delta and enhance the capacity of local stakeholders and decision-makers. Activities include monitoring groundwater levels, conducting soil analyses, and determining the carrying capacity for grazing animals. Based on these data, a comprehensive pasture management plan will be developed. Additionally, ecological interventions will be implemented to close illegal access points, convert eucalyptus plantation areas back into grazing land, and restore fragmented pasture habitats.

Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken
The project has made significant progress in addressing the environmental challenges of the Gediz Delta, especially rising salinity and groundwater depletion. Research focused on monitoring surface and groundwater, soil quality, and hydrogeological characteristics has provided key insights into the region's ecological health. Wells were drilled, and soil samples collected to assess variations in water retention and salinity, which are critical for developing sustainable water management strategies and long-term protection measures for the delta's ecosystems. Key outcomes include successful monitoring of groundwater dynamics, improved understanding of soil properties, and identification of risks to water quality, which will guide conservation efforts. Additionally, awareness-raising activities, including field events on World Wetlands Day and World Water Day, were held to promote wetland conservation. Capacity-building meetings with local shepherds focused on sustainable grazing and cooperative creation, supporting better pasture management. Seminars at local schools and preparations for the 22nd Türkiye Bird Conference on "Drying Lakes and Freshwater Ecosystems" are further
