Description and results/achievements of activities:
The "Defending Our Nature in a Changing World" meeting, held in May 2024, at Seferihisar Doğa Okulu, brought together nature defenders, activists, experts, and civil society representatives from various regions of Anatolia. The meeting focused on fostering collaboration and mutual understanding between local communities and environmental activists working in conservation. Discussions highlighted the importance of recognising and supporting the rights and roles of local communities in conservation efforts. The event emphasised the strength of collective action in defending nature, showcasing successful examples of community-led conservation initiatives, and exploring sustainable solutions to address environmental challenges.

The meeting successfully facilitated the exchange of knowledge and experiences among local communities and conservationists, creating a network of nature defenders in Anatolia. It contributed to raising awareness about the essential role of indigenous peoples in conservation, with a focus on recognising their rights and involving them in decision-making processes. Participants left with a renewed sense of motivation and solidarity, better equipped to advocate for the inclusion of local communities in conservation practices. The event served as a powerful platform for creating a collaborative environment where participants from diverse backgrounds shared strategies to ensure the effective involvement of local communities in the protection of nature. Furthermore, it sparked new partnerships and initiatives that will continue to enhance the role of local communities in conservation across the region. Based on the experiences of individuals and organisations fighting to defend the rights of nature, we also prepared the “Advocacy Guide for Defenders of Nature”.
