II. Implementation

Activities carried out to implement this Resolution
Activity
Scientific/technical activities
Description and results/achievements of activities:
The CARDIMED project is designed to implement nature-based solutions (NBS) to enhance ecosystem resilience and biodiversity in the Mediterranean Basin. These NBS include the restoration of coastal wetlands, the creation of riparian buffers, the removal of invasive species, and the establishment of green corridors. By leveraging natural processes, the project aims to improve water quality, mitigate salinity, restore native vegetation, and create sustainable habitats for native fauna. The initiative also focuses on fostering community participation through sustainable grazing practices, establishing wildlife refuges, and monitoring biodiversity.
Status
On-going
Please report on the result /achievement of the actions taken
The plan for the riparian buffer and diversion channel has been completed, with construction and ecological planting planned for the next phase. These actions aim to improve water quality, prevent salinity increase, and support biodiversity. Baseline biodiversity monitoring has been completed, and the pilot coastal wetland restoration project is underway to assess the impact of treated water on biodiversity and salinity. Green corridors are being established to connect fragmented habitats, and monitoring systems, including water quality sensors and camera traps, are in place to track biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Identify and briefly describe what future actions/activities are planned for the implementation of this Resolution
Future action / activity
Scientific/technical activities
Description
Looking ahead, the next steps include the construction of the riparian buffer, with ecological planting along the diversion channel to enhance freshwater filtration and groundwater recharge. The removal of eucalyptus trees will continue, followed by soil ploughing and the ecological restoration of native vegetation, which will improve biodiversity and restore natural hydrology in the wetlands. Ongoing biodiversity monitoring in the pilot wetland
