WCC 2020 Res 077 - Progress Report

This resolution has so far not been implemented directly, because the discussion on substitutes to Plastic are part of the negotiation outcome of the INC process as well as under the WTO Dialogue on Plastic Pollution, the broader Basel-Rotterdam-Stockholm Conventions on chemicals and wastes decisions and the negotiations around the establishment of a future Science Policy Panel on chemicals, wastes and pollution prevention (SPP) processes. In any case further scientific research and data/monitoring/indicator-information will be needed to understand the volume of current use of plastics, understand land use impacts of shift to paper, and take that information to governmental platforms and facilitate stakeholder consultations between land managers, pulp and paper companies, manufacturers and national & regional governments. It also includes elements of a consumer campaign to drive that shift, for which considerable research and campaign resources are required.
