Convene stakeholders/Networking
IUCN SUR strengthened the Latin American Grasslands and Savannas Platform as a regional space for exchange and collaboration. In June 2026, a regional Pre-COP dialogue in Quito brought together participants from 11 countries and 14 civil society and academic organisations, complementing wider regional dialogues and engagement of more than 100 stakeholders through the Platform.

Policy influencing/advocacy
Regional dialogue under the Grasslands and Savannas Platform informed recommendations on financing, ecosystem conversion, regenerative management, land–water linkages, monitoring, rights and inclusion. These messages supported IUCN and partner engagement around UNCCD COP17, helping raise the profile of grasslands and rangelands in regional land and drought agendas.

Education/Communication/Raising awareness
In support of IYRP 2026, IUCN SUR has promoted greater recognition of grasslands, savannas and rangelands through the regional Platform, newsletters, knowledge products, regional dialogues and international events, highlighting their importance for biodiversity, climate resilience, sustainable land management, livelihoods and inclusive governance.

Capacity building
The Platform has facilitated peer learning and knowledge exchange among government, civil society, academia and practitioners working on grasslands and savannas in Latin America. Building on regional dialogues held in 2026, IUCN and partners are developing a Community of Practice to sustain learning, exchange experiences and strengthen regional collaboration.

Scientific/technical activities
IUCN SUR is strengthening the integration of grasslands, rangelands and drylands into regional programming. This includes technical work linked to restoration, drought resilience and development of the GEF-9 Drylands and Drought Integrated Programme, including sustainable rangeland management, ecosystem restoration, water security and nature-based solutions.

Challenges / lessons learned
Challenges / lessons learned Description
Coordination issues

Grasslands and rangelands involve multiple sectors, institutions and policy processes, which can result in fragmented approaches. A key lesson has been the importance of creating sustained regional spaces that connect governments, civil society, academia and practitioners, while linking regional priorities with global processes such as UNCCD and IYRP.

Lack of awareness / engagement

Grasslands, savannas and rangelands remain comparatively under-recognised in conservation, restoration and climate agendas, often receiving less policy attention and dedicated finance than other ecosystems. Continued awareness-raising, stronger evidence and coordinated advocacy are needed to increase their visibility and support long-term engagement.
