Water quality

Accounting for freshwater quality in India

This monograph first describes the popular types of accounting usually followed in case of freshwater resources. Second, it reviews some fo the successful examples of accounting done in select countries from all over the world and focuses on lessons learnt from doing such an exercise in a developing country like India. Third, the change in the quality of water over the period 1993-2003 has been computed for surface water and groundwater. Fourth, the deviation from the national standard (acceptable limit) has been calculated.

Source-to-sea and landscape approaches

The report contextualises the current status of water quality and biodiversity in the Rio Doce watershed, providing selected data and information on the physical, chemical and biological quality of the water and an overview of the terrestrial, freshwater and marine biodiversity since the dam rupture. A review of the integrated approaches already adopted in the Rio Doce restoration actions is also provided, focusing mainly on the TTAC programmes that in some respect embody the source-to-sea and landscape approaches in their conception.

Green infrastructure guide for water management

Green Infrastructure (GI) is becoming increasingly recognized as an important opportunity for addressing the complex challenges of water management. The GI approach refers to the natural or semi-natural systems that provide services for water resources management with equivalent or similar benefits to conventional (built) "grey" water infrastructure. This guide addresses one of the main barriers to widespread adoption of GI solutions: a general lack of awareness of the solutions and associated cost-benefits.

International glossary of hydrology = Glossaire international d'hydrologie = International glossary of hydrology (Russian version) = Glosario hidrológico internacional

Agreed terminology is essential for communication, shared research and joint action, especially at the international level. This is why a glossary of hydrology is so important -- to stimulate further progress in water sciences and to facilitate the translation of technical and scientific publications that may be of interest to a wider audience but are available only in one language. This work defines technical and scientific terms in English, French, Russian, and Spanish to facilitate translation of publications and stimulate progress in the water sciences.

Health, dignity, and development : what will it take?

In this abridged version of its report, the Task Force outlines the bold yet practical actions needed to increase access to water and sanitation. The report underscores the need to focus on the global sanitation crisis, which contributes to the death of 3,900 children each day, to increase access to domestic water supply, and to invest in integrated development and management of water resources. All are necessary for countries to reduce poverty and hunger, improve health, advance gender equality, and ensure environmental sustainability.
