Malaysia's invisible ivory channel

Complete Title:
Malaysia's invisible ivory channel : an assessment of ivory seizures involving Malaysia from January 2003 - May 2014
IUCN Publication

Organization(s):

Abstract:

Malaysia is the world’s paramount illicit ivory transit country. To better understand this trade dynamic, TRAFFIC assessed information from ivory seizures -- made either by Malaysian authorities, or outside the country but with Malaysia identified as part of the trade chain -- from a period of over 11 years (from January 2003 to May 2014). This report discusses some insights from the seizures over this period, as well as highlighting needs and opportunities in order for Malaysia to remove itself from its current position as a country of international concern for illicit trade in ivory under CITES.
